Marine Exhaust Hoses

Most boats and yachts have a wet exhaust system. Raw water from the engine cooling system is pushed into the exhaust gas stream to cool down the hot gases and reduce engine noise. Because water absorbs heat therefore reducing temperatures downstream, exhaust lines can be made from materials like rubber, silicone, or fiberglass. Compared to steel, these materials are lightweight, fully corrosion-resistant, and flexible, or can easily be molded into different shapes.

The hoses used in wet exhaust systems are rated for certain temperatures. When the temps increase drastically due to mishaps like debris clogging the intake, which interrupts the flow of cooling raw water, even the strongest hose won’t be able to withstand the thermal load and will eventually get damaged. Even if engine and generator hoses are visually decent, it’s a good idea to replace them along with clamps once in five years or so, simply because the material they are made from ages and weakens.
