Exhaust bellows or boots are used on stern drive engines to protect their critical components from water. There are three bellows, meant to seal the exhaust, U-joints, and shift cable. They are shaped to ensure the necessary level of flexibility in order to allow the pivoting and tilting motion of the drive unit while steering. These components are made from rubber, a material that tends to deteriorate over time. Bellows typically last five-six years and should be replaced at intervals recommended by the boat manufacturer.
The rule of thumb is to check the condition of your stern drive’s bellows every year and replace all three at a time. If one boot has deteriorated, the other two are probably nearing the end of their service life, too. Leaking bellows could let water into the boat’s bilge and interior. If it’s time to get replacements, look no further as here you’ll find boat exhaust boots that are an exact match for your motor. Manufactured by renowned companies including Trident, Shields Hose, and Sierra, they are resistant to high temps, exhaust gases, salt water, and other extremes.
