Most boats have different systems using special openings in the hull for their operation, both above and below the waterline. These include engine cooling, water ballast, plumbing, and some other systems, and each of them has to be installed properly and inspected regularly in order to avoid dangerous leaks. Particularly, thru-hull fittings and seacocks require careful attention, especially those installed under the water. It's not recommended to use nylon or even brass fittings in such places, while those made of bronze or some specific composite materials are approved by ABYC and meet strict requirements concerning tensile strength, corrosion resistance, etc.
As for boat thru-hull fittings installed above the waterline, the requirements are somewhat lower, but it doesn't mean they can be omitted.
