A marine GPS is a useful tool for navigational safety, which is widely used in chartplotters and other equipment providing information about the vessel's real-time position. In order to establish a reliable connection with a satellite, a GPS module needs an antenna, and you can choose from electronic devices with this part built-in and those requiring an external antenna for good operation. If you need greater performance, stronger signal, and higher mapping accuracy, choose the second variant and install a quality external antenna in an open place where the sky is always visible. Also, take into account the manufacturer's recommendations about the minimum and maximum installation height.
Besides, marine GPS antennas can be passive and active. The latter are usually more modern and have a built-in low-noise amplifier (LNA for short), which is powered by low voltage and meant to improve the reception.
