Appeared in the early 2000s, the universal shipborne automatic identification system (AIS) incorporates a standard marine VHF transceiver, GPS module, gyrocompass, and certain electronic navigation sensors such as the ROTI indicator. In order to receive and transmit signals, an AIS transceiver needs a VHF antenna that has to meet certain requirements; particularly, it has to be vertical, with impedance of 50 ohm, and its gain should be no less than 3 dB.
