An oil pan is a simple part that plays a crucial role in the operation of your boat's engine. Forming the bottom part of the motor, it stores oil and provides the necessary tightness with the help of special sealing located throughout its perimeter. However, a modern pan is not just a simple reservoir and has some specific features aimed at improved performance, such as baffles and a windage tray. The baffles allow for equalizing the level of lubricant in the sump when the vessel is swinging. As for the windage tray, it's a barrier that keeps the excess oil away from the rotating assembly and prevents a so-called windage effect caused by the flow of air in the crankcase.
If you see streaks of lubricant or other kinds of leaks on the pan, it's a strong reason to check this part carefully and replace its gasket or even the whole pan in the case of severe damage.
