It's no secret that each powerboat needs a tank to store fuel, and these reservoirs differ depending on the boat's type. Commonly, there are two main categories including portable and permanent tanks. The latter are usually installed under the deck of the boat with an inboard or stern-drive engine. As the name implies, such reservoirs are not meant to be removed, although it's possible. Available in different volumes and shapes, they can be made of plastic, fiberglass, or aluminum. Located out of sight, these parts of the fuel system or their fittings may develop leaks, which gives their owners a strong reason for repair.
As for portable tanks, you can just take them off for refueling; besides, they can be used in addition to permanent ones if you want to increase your boat’s operating range. Actually, most smaller boats equipped with an outboard engine utilize portable fuel tanks. Commonly, they are made of plastic or steel and feature the same potential issues – cracks, leaks, inner debris, etc. Because of repeated use, quick-disconnect fittings that are often utilized with such tanks can become the source of leaks or other problems. Should you face any of them, check out our boat fuel tanks collection for a quality replacement.
