However, unlike automotive and motorcycle motors, most outboard engines don't have an air filter, just a kind of an air box to dampen engine noise. The reason is quite obvious – the quantity of dust and debris found over the water is minimum. However, there is a crucial requirement concerning inboard engines: they have to be outfitted with a flame arrestor, the part looking like a traditional filter. Flame arrestors are also installed in the air intake and can filter the air getting into the cylinders, but their main function is different.

As the name implies, they are meant to stop the flame coming from the motor in the case of backfire.
