Ringing a bell has been part of maritime traditions since the fifteenth century. Every half hour, the strokes of a ship’s bell arranged in certain patterns indicated the timing of watches; this tradition is still alive in the Navy. It is also rung to announce the arrival and departure of the captain, officers, and other dignitaries. The bell can be used to sound an alarm in case of fire, with the number of strokes indicating the location of a fire. In our day and age, one of the functions of the bell is to signal the presence of the vessel when visibility is reduced, e.g. in fog.
A bell is still part of the U.S. Coast Guard required equipment on vessels over 65 ft. It’s not uncommon to see it on smaller boats as well, where it is used as a signaling device and generally seen as a traditional item on board. Here you’ll find bells for vessels that are compliant with USCG, ABYC, and NMMA requirements, and many can also be used as nautical décor pieces that are sure to make a statement in any marine-style interior. These items are traditionally made of brass and may be polished to a shine or plated in chrome or nickel.
