Like many other vessels, your boat may have two separate electrical systems – a direct and alternating current one. While the former, most likely, needs 12 or 24V and allows you to start the engine and power crucial lighting and navigational equipment, the latter can power lots of useful appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, electric cookers, microwaves, etc. In many boats, it's a single-phase 120-volt system, but there are a couple of things that differentiate it from a usual AC network installed at home. Marine power plugs are among them, and their condition should never be ignored.
First, they are designed taking into account such crucial principles as water tightness, resistance to moisture and corrosion, the ability to withstand wear and mechanical strains related to the use of heavy cables, convenience of use, and safety. Many of them are made lockable to minimize the risk of falling out. There are male and female plugs that may also differ by the number of pins. Larger boats can use higher voltage and several phases, which require four- or even five-wire plugs having several poles while also being able to withstand higher amperage.
