A life jacket, life vest, or PFD (personal flotation device), by whatever name you call it, remains a staple piece of safety equipment. The type of activity on the water dictates the type of PFD that is best to wear. Compared to inherently buoyant PFDs that utilize foam material, inflatable ones are more compact, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. Their slim design does not restrict movement, keeps you cool in the hot summer, and can be worn over thicker work garments in cold temperatures. This makes them suitable for kayak fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, and other kinds of water activities, as well as some commercial applications.
These PFDs can be inflated manually, automatically, or feature both types of activation. In the case of manual inflation, you need to pull a handle that activates a CO2 cartridge. This type is recommended for strong swimmers as it doesn't offer instant buoyancy. Automatically-inflated life vests are activated upon submersion and designed to keep unconscious wearers and nonswimmers afloat. They are not suitable for active sports due to a high likelihood of ending up in the water.
