Like any other internal combustion engine generating a huge amount of heat, the motor propelling a powerboat should have an effective cooling system. When it comes to vessels, there are two main kinds of such systems: a so-called "raw water" system and an enclosed setup. The former uses nothing but usual outboard water to remove heat from the engine's internals. The latter is more modern and complex, yet it's more durable: it utilizes a special cooling fluid (typically a mix of freshwater and antifreeze) circulating within the system, while a heat exchanger helps to dissipate heat from the fluid to raw water.
Actually, both of these systems employ raw water pumps sucking outboard water, but in the second case, there is also an inner circulating pump working in a closed loop, as cooling liquid and raw water never contact. Designed to fit certain engines, the pump can be actuated with the help of a belt or gear drive, and it has to be able to withstand a harsh marine environment to last long. The same goes for its gaskets providing good sealing. Therefore, it's reasonable to purchase only those products developed by reliable suppliers and meant for use on a vessel; a wide range of such goods can be found on our digital shelves.
