Most modern marine inboard engines use an enclosed cooling system in which the engine block and head are not cooled by outboard water directly. However, raw water is still used to reduce the temperature of the cooling fluid, and it's achieved by means of a heat exchanger in which both liquids circulate in separate tubes. In order to make this part serve longer and prevent it from being clogged, shipbuilders install a device called a strainer that is normally located in a raw water intake. An in-line strainer operates pretty much like a swimming pool skimmer while filtering out debris, sand, leaves, etc.
Inside, such a strainer has a removable filter or screen that has to be cleaned or replaced once in a while. Because of its shape, the screen is also known as a basket and can be made of plastic, stainless steel, or various corrosion-resistant alloys, while the body is normally manufactured from bronze or plastic. In our online collection, you can choose from numerous strainers available in different sizes and designs; besides, we carry sight glasses, gaskets, caps, mounting hardware, and many other components for marine cooling systems.
