Boat Chains

An anchor rode of most vessels having an anchor may be a chain, a rope, or the combination of both. An all-chain rode is usually installed on larger boats having a windlass, and it's crucial to choose the right type, diameter, and length of the chain. There are different types including proof coil, BBB, and high-test options, however, only the last two kinds can work with a windlass. Check its specification to make sure; generally, most new models can work with high-test chains (having the Grade 4, 40, or 43). Like their BBB counterparts, they have short links suitable for windlasses, yet they are made of high-carbon steel and feature greater strength than low-carbon BBB variants.

This advantage allows for making a thinner chain having the same strength. All of the high-test and BBB products are galvanized to resist corrosion and have special markings on their links. As for the combined rode, it usually consists of a long nylon rope and a short chain without strict requirements to its compound. But anyway, most of these chains are also galvanized and feature specified workloads; such a solution can be perfectly used with most windlasses. If you need higher corrosion resistance or better aesthetics, you can select the chain made of stainless steel or covered with color PVC coating.
