An autopilot is an extremely useful add-on meant to maintain a stable course of your vessel without human help, thus giving you new opportunities and extra time for fishing, having a rest, communicating with the crew, etc. Modern autopilot systems are more perfect than ever, and even the simplest of them have got more accurate and reliable. An autopilot generally includes a heading sensor, course computer, control head, and drive mechanism (hydraulic or mechanical). The computer is the "brain" of the system calculating the algorithm of its operation and responsible for proper communication between an autopilot controller and other components.
Different manufacturers of marine autopilots develop their own technologies and principles of how these computers work, and their models are selected depending on the drive type, the size of the vessel, and the kind of its steering system. Some computers can work with different drives including a high- or low-current hydraulic steering pump, solenoid valve, or other linear or rotary mechanisms.
