Boat Steering Kits

Marine Steering Kits

A sailing or motor boat can be steered in different ways, starting with a usual tiller to more complex hydraulic systems to electronic "steer-by-wire" setups. Each of them has its own pros and cons; for instance, the hydraulic equipment is famous for the ability to turn the wheel with one finger, although it's sometimes criticized by sailboat owners for the lack of feedback. The hydraulic system may seem complex, but in fact, the basic setup is even easier to install than its mechanical counterparts. The helm usually operates as a hydraulic pump and creates the necessary pressure in the cylinder that ultimately turns the rudder blade or outboard engine.

But still, for smaller boats, a mechanical steering system is a rather good solution. It includes a steering wheel, helm, and metal cable connecting the helm and outboard motor or rudder with the help of special fittings. The helm can be of a rotary or rack-and-pinion type, while the cable is normally lubed and protected with a flexible jacket. If you're going to install a new steering system, it makes sense to choose from boat steering kits that include all the necessary parts (except for the wheel) and hardware, and you can find them in our online store.
