The PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical seal which is formed in-between the stationary carbon flange and flat surface of the rotating steel rotor. PSS Shaft Seals are utterly strong, durable, resistant to high temperatures, high salinity water, UV radiation, chemically resistant to petroleum-type products, oxidation and corrosion. Aside from all of the aforementioned benefits, the PSS Shaft Seal can eliminate the wear of the prop shaft and water leakage in the bilge, as it is actually 100% water tight. It can be retrofitted with ease to most marine shaft, and is offered for shafts going from 3/4” to 6” in diameter.

Speaking about its performance, the PSS Shaft Seal works as following. The stationary carbon flange is coupled to the vessels rear / stern tube with clamps and the carbon flange is coupled to the bellows with clamps. The steel rotor is placed on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. Then, the steel rotor is utilized to tighten the bellows before the collar is fitted to the shaft with screws. The compression keeps maintaining contact between the sides and lets the PSS to act as compensator for the pressure from the prop.

The carbon flange is drilled out larger than the shaft diameter, thus making it “float” around the shaft and to compensate for any existing misalignments and vibration issues. The stainless steel roundel is tightened to the shaft by two o-ring seals that are inserted into the opening of the roundel. These o-ring seals rotate with the shaft and steel rotor and are not subjected to wear while under load.
