First introduced more than 50 years ago, trim tabs are a time-tested solution allowing you to improve the boat's performance by reducing water drag. In most cases, they are mechanical, although there are innovative and more expensive electronically-controlled systems that use the same basic principle. The tabs differ in size and are usually installed on the transom to create a lift force and reduce the vessel's trim angle at speed and during maneuvers. There are many companies that make such equipment, but their approaches are different, and the same goes for the price.
Located in Ohio, Nauticus is one of those companies, and its products known as Smart Tabs were patented back in 1999. Since then, they have been installed on many small and medium-sized boats, and improvements in performance that they provide were even documented by some OEM boat builders, not to mention a number of international magazine tests. Thus, Nauticus trim tabs can help you address some performance and/or handling issues. Currently, there are several lineups of these products designed for various boat types, which include the Smart Tabs line, Smart Tabs II, Protroller Series, Lectrotab, and some others.
In particular, Smart Tabs II are meant for low-profile aluminum or fiberglass boats, while the Protroller series is equipped with a special lever easily turning the tabs into trolling brakes when needed. All of the company's models operate automatically utilizing special gas or electromechanical actuators that are covered with rubber boots and have something in common with automotive shock absorbers. Their load rating can be adjusted, and such a system provides a smooth and prompt reaction to boat speed and other conditions. The tabs lower fuel consumption, reduce bow rise and porpoising, and give you better performance and a more comfortable ride.
