As an example, McMurdo PLB devices are approved by COSPAS/SARSAT. They are designed to alert search & rescue services and pinpoint your location in the event of an emergency. PLBs are registered to a person, while EPIRBs are registered to a specific vessel.
McMurdo S4 SART is built to be stored in a lifeboat or used as a carry-on device if it is necessary to abandon ship. When it detects an incoming X-band radar pulse coming from another vessel, it transmits a response signal on its radar display pointing to your location. The biggest thing about this device is its long operating time of about 96 hours. There is also a wide lineup of McMurdo AIS products for smaller non-SOLAS vessels. Using a built-in GPS receiver, they can determine vessel position information along with its speed and course and receive all AIS targets within a radius of dozens of miles.
